MacBook camera not working

MacBook camera not working

If your camera stopped working suddenly, or you got a new mac and the camera doesn’t work on some application like zoom. Today, I will show you how to fix a MacBook camera. Often, this issue is not from the hardware, instead, you need to grant permissions to the particular app/software that wants to use the camera.

One Major way you could check if your camera is okay is to check your camera indicator light. If the camera indicator light next to the camera flashes green on your Mac notebook, The green light is an indicator that the iSight camera is turned on, so if it’s on, you must have either Photo Booth, iMovie or iChat enabled. You can also check if your Mac software is up-to-date, this may cause an error while putting up the camera, you can simply update your software to see if that solves the whole issue.

If you are using macOS Catalina and you activated screen time on your system, make sure your camera is turned on and apps that use the camera have time available.

How to check Screen Time settings

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Screen Time.
  2. Click Content & Privacy in the sidebar, then click Apps.
  3. Make sure the checkbox for Camera is selected.
  4. Click App Limits in the sidebar. If you need to use your camera with an app in the list, make sure the checkbox for limits is not selected.

Most times, we need to grant permissions to the application we want to use, such as zoom, and these steps below show you how you can grant software permission on your macOS.

How do I allow apps to access my Camera on Mac?

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Security & Privacy.
  2. Click the Privacy tab, then click Camera in the sidebar.

If any of these cannot work, try changing the application you’re using if you’ve been using FaceTime, i suggest you try using Photo Booth. Why is my Mac camera showing a black screen?

If you encounter these issues, and you have to try rebooting the system and nothing seems to work, I suggest you update your software, this may be because of outdated drivers or missing drivers, when your camera shows a black screen this means the camera is not connected and the app in use is not catching any data from the camera. In another way, the camera lens might be blocked with dust or covered with something.

  1. Take a soft dry cloth and wipe off the camera’s face
  2. Test camera over different application
  3. Check out the camera light sign, Greenlight shows the camera is in use.
  4. Reboot the system once more
  5. Update your camera drivers
