Often when we get to interact with people on social media where there seem to be a lot of scammers and people who fake to be something they’re not we sometimes end up getting scammed and when we realize the huge sum of money we just sent over to the person, it breaks the heart.
How do you avoid getting scams? How do you avoid paying money to someone that’s not real, and how do you avoid sending money to a fake person on Venmo? We’ll talk about these in this article today.
One thing we should know about Venmo is that once a transaction is being made to someone whose account is verified and also receives funds on Venmo, the money is no longer on your account; the recipient gets the funds instantly even though it may take 10mins before showing up.

Someone sent me money on Venmo, but I don’t have an account
Not everyone uses the Venmo application, when you send funds to a friend’s email or phone number, you just send funds to someone who is not on Venmo, this is also the same as sending funds to a friend that’s not yet verified on Venmo. If you have to send money to someone, make sure you know how legit is the person and also if the person can receive funds using the Venmo application. Always ask these questions to avoid making mistakes.
If someone had sent you money on Venmo, but you don’t have an account, you can simply download the application, and sign up with the same number or email the person sent the money to, you should also verify your account to get full access to your account including your Venmo balance.
Always confirm the number and email before sending off payments and make sure you know the recipient you are sending the funds to.
How to accept Venmo payments through email
You can receive money using your email on Venmo, you can easily do this by going into your settings on Venmo and updating your email address, so it matches what was used for the payment. If the email address already matches, please verify your email address.
Before sending out funds, Always confirm the email you are sending money to. But what if you already did?
Will Venmo refund money if scammed?
Once you notice that you’ve been scammed on Venmo, the first thing you have to do is to report it immediately, but since you have the receiver’s email or phone number, you can contact them with a good approach, letting them know that the money you have just sent to them was a mistake, if you tried calling and the person is not responding to your calls then I think you have to report immediately to Venmo.
Of course, I know you have tried sending a return request because it is so impossible to cancel funds sent to someone whose account is verified on Venmo, you can only ask for a return request and wait for the response from the recipient.
How to get money back from Venmo if scammed
You can’t cancel a payment already made to an existing Venmo account, you can only ask for the receipt to return the money by sending them the “return request”. If you had made a payment twice to your friend, you can simply tell them to make a refund.
You can’t get back your money once you’ve sent it off to an existing Venmo account, that’s why it’s important you make sure you remain extra careful before sending funds to someone you don’t know on Venmo. If you believe that the person you just sent the money to is a scammer, then rush up Venmo’s contact page and report immediately.
If you sent a payment to a phone number or email address that has not been registered with a Venmo account yet, you can take back the payment in the “Incomplete” section of the Venmo app.
You can only get your money back if you use iMessage to make the payment, but there’s how it works, Venmo says, a payment sent in iMessage will expire and be automatically canceled if the recipient doesn’t accept the payment within three days. You can also manually cancel the payment before it is accepted in the Venmo app.
